Detail of Selected Interior Components in the
Pianella Monstre Paganini Orchestrion, Model 12

This six-station Paganini sized Philipps Revolver Mechanic (roll
changer) sparkles like new, and holds six music rolls, playing them
in rotation one after another, providing a continuation of music
before repeating. A round-leather belt drives a system of gears
and chains, powering all of the mechanical functions except one;
the forward motion of the music roll is powered by a wind-motor,
whose speed is carefully regulated and also adjustable to set the
music tempo. |
 |
The round-leather belt, part of which is shown at left, powers
the heavy-duty needs of the music roll changing mechanism. Central
in the photograph is the speed reduction countershaft, fitted with
a large and small flat belt pulley used to reduce the rotational
speed of the feeder pump crankshaft. At right, a portion of the
register switching stack can be seen. In the background part of
the 30-note xylophone is visible. |
 |
The beautifully restored piano harp and action, the subject of
this photograph, can be lifted out of the back side of the Paganini
(preferably by two strong men) for servicing and tuning.
