This photograph is taken looking upward. The bell-bars and metal
strikers hang downward, below the small valve chest that operates
the unit, which is the opposite of how the bells unit may appear
to be oriented in this picture.
Each metal hammer is mounted on a long piece of spring steel.
Near the place where it attaches to the pneumatic motor it butts
up against a felt pad, so that the hammer cannot rest against the
bell-bar after the initial forward strike, permitting a beautifully
resonant and ringing tone.
