J.D. Philipps Orchestrion Fabrik
(circa 1890s)

The Philipps Orchestrion Fabrik in the 1890s.
The Johann Daniel Philipps began his career building automatic musical instruments at the age of 23, when he built a barrel orchestrion for the Germania Hotel and Dance Hall in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. In 1877 the firm of Philipps and Ketterer was established, a relationship that lasted nine years. In 1886 The Frankfurt Orchestrion and Piano Instrument Factory--J.D. Philipps--was formed, and during at least part of the 1880s and through the 1890s the company occupied the building complex shown above.
